Timeless in Black & White - 35mm Film Family Portraits on Oʻahu

Why Black & White Film Still Matters

Digital photography is clean, instant, and flexible—but black & white film has a certain vibe. Every frame is a decision. Every roll has a limit. When I load a 35 mm camera, it slows everything down which forces me to notice the small gestures that make a family feel like them.

This Oʻahu family wanted exactly that: photographs that felt refined, artful, and slightly nostalgic. They opted to add film photography to their digital session—paying extra for film stock, developing, and professional scans. The result? A gallery that looks like it could hang in a museum or live in a family heirloom box.

The Session

We started in the late afternoon near the ocean, when the light was soft enough to let the shadows breathe. I alternated between my digital body and my 35 mm film camera, but the film slowed the rhythm of the shoot in the best way.
Mom held her daughter close, Dad laughed as their toddler son clung to his leg—tiny, honest moments that always land best on film.

Black & white tones transform familiar scenes into something timeless: the texture of linen, the reflection in a child’s eyes, the grain of film that feels like memory itself.

When the scans came back from the lab, the family told me it was exactly what they hoped for—“classy, real, and forever.”

What’s Included in a Film Photography Add-On Session

If you’re curious about adding film to your shoot, here’s how it works:

  • We photograph your full session digitally as usual.

  • You can add individual or multiple rolls of 35 mm film (black & white only).

  • Film is developed professionally and scanned by Tone Studio.

  • You receive digital copies of every frame alongside your main gallery.

  • $120/roll which includes 36 additional images.

Film processing takes about 2–3 weeks longer than digital delivery, but the result is worth the wait—texture, contrast, grain and emotion you can’t replicate.

Why Clients Love Film Photography in Hawaii

Oʻahu’s light pairs beautifully with film. It softens harsh sun, deepens contrast, and gives that nostalgic finish.
Clients who choose film sessions often describe the photos as:

  • “Fine-art meets documentary.”

  • “Classy but emotional.”

  • “Exactly what we wanted for prints and wall art.”

Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary, updating family portraits, or documenting your Hawaii vacation, black & white film adds a sense of permanence, a reminder that some moments are meant to be felt, not just seen.
