About
My name is Mike and I am the owner of Tone Photography Studio. I like to approach each wedding with a documentary style, mostly capturing real moments and being in the background blending in on your day. By using a combination of film and digital photography, I take both a classic and modern perspective to capture timeless moments.
Our team is based in Kaneohe, Oahu but we often travel to other islands and the Bay Area, California to shoot weddings. In my free time I like to play drums, surf, and travel.
When I’m not working I’m usually surfing or skateboarding. I also enjoy playing drums, guitar and pickleball. Check out the personal gallery here to see day in the life photos of what we usually do.

Potential clients always tell us, “Your photos look so real. How do you do that?”
The simple answer is that they are real!
Every wedding image we share comes from an actual wedding day with real couples, real guests, real timelines, and all of the real unpredictable and crazy moments that come with them…
A lot of wedding imagery you see online comes from what’s called a “styled shoot.” These are planned photoshoots with professional models, curated decor, controlled lighting, and plenty of time to create each image.
There’s nothing wrong with that approach, but it isn’t really how a wedding day works, and we don’t believe it’s always a true representation of a photographer’s skill. A big part of being a good wedding photographer is knowing what to do when things aren’t going according to plan. The lighting changes, the timeline runs behind, the weather turns, or something completely unexpected happens. That’s where experience really matters. Anyone can create a beautiful image when everything is controlled. The real skill is being able to create beautiful images when nothing is.
I also shoot commercial photography, so I know firsthand how different the two can be. On a commercial shoot, we have plenty of time to plan, light, adjust, and recreate a shot until everything is exactly right. Weddings don’t work like that…(I wish they did sometimes lol). But that’s also what I love about them! We also don’t have any styled shoots on our website as we don’t really believe that’s a true representation of what a photographer is able to capture on an actual wedding day.
We believe being a good wedding photographer is less about creating the “perfect” situation and more about noticing what’s already happening. It’s knowing where to be, anticipating a moment before it happens, adapting when plans change, and documenting everything in a way that still feels beautiful without turning the wedding into a photoshoot.
Of course, I’ll give you direction during portraits when needed. But for most of the day, I want you to actually experience your wedding while I document it. If that sounds like the kind of wedding photography you’ve been looking for, let’s talk!
