What to Expect After Booking and Engagement Session

A simple guide to help your Oahu engagement or surprise proposal session feel relaxed, natural, and stress free.

First off, thank you so much for booking with Tone Photography Studio. We’re genuinely excited to capture this chapter of your lives. This page covers the most common questions, tips, and details couples usually ask about before their session so everything feels easy and organized leading up to the day.

Communication & Planning

For surprise proposals especially, we prefer keeping most communication through email so everything stays organized and discreet. It’s also best to keep correspondence in the same email thread, we have a lot of inquiries and clients so having everything in one place makes it easier for both of us.

What To Wear

Neutral and earthy tones usually photograph best in Hawaii.

Some colors that work especially well:

  • cream

  • tan

  • muted green

  • soft blue

  • rust tones

Try to avoid:

  • neon colors

  • pure white works but it’s not my favorite

  • large logos

  • overly busy patterns

For surprise proposals specifically, booking dinner reservations afterward can actually be a great excuse to naturally encourage dressing up a little more.

The Proposal Game Plan

For surprise proposals, we usually create a casual and natural setup so the moment still feels authentic and private.

A common approach is:

  • I pretend I’m waiting for another client

  • you ask me to take a quick photo of the two of you on your phone

  • I guide you into a couple poses

  • I give a keyword cue

  • you get down on one knee

This allows me to already be in position and ready without making the proposal feel staged or obvious.

Every proposal is different though, and we can absolutely customize the plan depending on your personalities and comfort levels.

Face Toward The Scenic Backdrop

Whether it’s the mountains, ocean, or another beautiful view, it usually works best to face toward the main scenic backdrop during the proposal. This allows me to capture your partner’s reaction more clearly while also keeping the landscape framed beautifully behind you both.

At locations like Kualoa Regional Park, facing toward the mountains tends to create the strongest and most emotional compositions. (See sample photos below.)

Don’t Rush The Moment

These are probably the biggest tips I can give.

Once you get down on one knee, take a minute to actually talk to your partner before asking the question.

Tell them:

  • why you love them

  • what this moment means to you

  • what you’re excited about for the future

Not only does this create a more meaningful moment emotionally, but it also gives me time to capture genuine reactions and different angles naturally.

The best photos usually happen in the moments between the words.

When facing away from the mountains, it becomes harder to capture your partner’s facial reaction clearly during the proposal. The scenery still looks beautiful, but we lose some of the emotional close up moments and cleaner reaction angles.

When facing toward the mountains, we’re able to capture both the scenic backdrop and your partner’s reaction much more clearly. This usually creates the strongest wide shots, close ups, and side angle compositions.

Family Watching The Proposal

Some couples prefer keeping the proposal completely private, while others bring family along secretly to watch from a distance.

Both options work great.

If family attends, we usually recommend they stay farther back during the actual proposal so the moment still feels intimate. Afterward we can absolutely bring everyone together for group photos.

Proof Galleries & Editing

After your session, you’ll first receive a proof gallery.

The proof gallery is mainly for selecting your favorite images. Most of the images inside are lightly processed or straight out of camera previews and are not fully edited yet.

Your final edited photos will look much closer to the polished work you see on Instagram and throughout the website, including:

  • full color grading

  • retouching

  • skin cleanup

  • tonal adjustments

  • overall finishing work

Most sessions include a set number of edited images, but additional edited images can also be purchased afterward if desired.

Final Delivery Timeline

Sneak peeks and social media previews are usually shared first shortly after the session. If you'd like to be tagged in any Instagram posts or reels, please send over both of your Instagram handles beforehand.

The best way for us to share the content is by adding you as a “collaborator” on the post and having you accept the collaboration request. This allows the post to appear on both of our accounts, makes it easier to share with family and friends, and really helps support our small business, which we greatly appreciate.

Proof galleries are typically delivered within a few days depending on workload and travel schedules. Once your favorite selections are submitted, final edited galleries are usually completed within about 3 weeks. A rush delivery add on is available as well if you'd like your final gallery sooner.

We’d also love for you to send us a song you’d like used for the sneak peek post or video. What song feels special to both of you? If possible, please include the specific version since there are often multiple covers or remixes of the same song.

If you’re unsure ahead of time, no worries at all. You can always discuss it together and let us know after the session too.

Final Thoughts

You do not need modeling experience.
You do not need perfect weather.
You do not need to know how to pose.

The goal is simply to create an experience that feels relaxed, meaningful, and true to you both.

We’ll guide the rest.

Thank you again for trusting us to document such an important moment in your lives!
