Secret Island Proposal Photography at Kualoa Ranch

Planning a surprise proposal at Secret Island or Secret Dock at Kualoa Ranch? First off, amazing choice. It is one of the most unique proposal locations on Oahu, with ocean views, mountain backdrops, and that very cinematic “how is this real life” feeling.

That said, Secret Island does come with a few important logistics to understand before booking. The dock is beautiful, but access, lighting, privacy, and timing all depend on how you choose to book the location.

Below is a simple breakdown of the main options so you can decide what works best for your proposal.

*****Spoiler alert: if you're looking for the easiest and most stress-free experience, I highly recommend booking one of the private tour options.

The private tours give us much more flexibility with timing, privacy, and logistics, and make it significantly easier to pull off a surprise proposal without having to coordinate around group tour schedules or other guests.

If you want to do Secret Island the best way possible, I would recommend planning for a total budget of around $2,000. This would cover the private tour experience as well as professional photography, allowing us to focus on creating a smooth, relaxed experience and capturing the proposal without unnecessary complications. There are also more budget friendly options which are mentioned below.

What is the photography session fee and what does it include?

For Secret Island, the photography session fee is $1000. The goal is to capture the excitement of the proposal itself and then create a variety of natural, timeless engagement portraits around the property.

  • Coverage of the surprise proposal and engagement portraits afterward

  • 60-minute photography session

  • Multiple photo locations within Secret Island including Secret Beach

  • 50 professionally edited digital images

  • 3 Polaroid film images to take home as keepsake

  • Online gallery for viewing, downloading, and sharing

  • *****Please allow approximately 3 to 4 hours total for the Secret Island experience. While the photography portion is about 60 minutes, transportation to and from the island, check-in, waiting for tour departures, and coordination time make the overall experience significantly longer for both the client and photographer.

*****We do offer lower rates for nearby locations such as Kualoa Regional Park, Kahana Bay, and other public beach parks. Secret Island requires additional planning, transportation, coordination, and travel time for both the client and photographer, which is why the pricing is different.

Can We Take Engagement Photos at Secret Beach After the Proposal?

Yes. After the proposal, we can move into an engagement session at Secret Beach. It is about a 5 to 10 minute walk from the dock at Secret Island, so it is an easy transition after the proposal.

Secret Beach is great for portraits because it gives us more variety with the ocean, sand, palm trees, and Chinaman’s hat views in the background.

A Note About Lighting at Secret Island

Lighting is one of the biggest factors that affects how your final photos will look. Sample images are at the bottom of this page.

Morning Hours: If we photograph during the morning tour hours, you'll typically get bright blue skies and vibrant colors. The tradeoff is that the sun is higher in the sky, which creates stronger shadows and harsher light on faces. We can absolutely create beautiful images, but the look is more bright and tropical than soft and romantic. It can also be quite bright for people with sensitive eyes, which sometimes makes it more difficult to keep eyes fully open and relaxed in photos.

Sunset: If we photograph during sunset, the light becomes much softer and more flattering. You'll get warmer tones, softer shadows, and that glowy look that many couples are drawn to in engagement and proposal photos. This is generally my preferred lighting for portraits.

Neither option is wrong, they simply create a different look and feel. Morning sessions tend to be bright, colorful, and vibrant, while sunset sessions tend to be softer, warmer, and more romantic.

Option 1: Morning Tour Hours

The most budget-friendly option is booking 3 tickets on one of the regular Secret Island tours. This allows us to access the dock during normal tour hours and photograph the proposal during the morning.

We will not have exclusive access to the dock. The area is shared with other tour guests, employees, and anyone else using the dock that day. Because of that, the exact proposal timing depends on the tour schedule and finding a clean window where the area feels natural.

I have photographed proposals this way before, and it is definitely doable. But I have also had an employee accidentally ruin the surprise before. The proposal still worked out, but it took a little bit of the magic out of the moment.

This option is usually the most affordable, with tour tickets around $160 total for 3 people, but pricing should be confirmed directly with Kualoa Ranch.

Option 2: Private Sunset Buyout

The private after-hours buyout is the option I recommend if the dock itself is important to you.

With this option, you book a private experience through Kualoa Ranch and we get exclusive access to the dock during sunset. The staff boats us over separately, and I can hide nearby to capture the proposal without other tour guests or employees around.

This gives us much more control over timing, privacy, and the overall experience.

The lighting still may not look exactly like your inspiration photos, but it will be much closer to that softer, warmer sunset look compared to the daytime tour option.

This option is more expensive because Kualoa Ranch charges a private location fee, often around $800, but it creates a much smoother and more private experience. This fee would be in addition to the photography session fee.

Option 3: After-Hours Walk-In Access (most risky)

There is technically another option where someone could try to access the dock area after hours without booking a private buyout, but I do not recommend this route.

First, it is not legal, access is uncertain, and the dock area is often used for TV, film, and commercial productions. I also work in the film industry and have personally worked on multiple productions that have used this exact location. When a production has the area reserved, it can be completely closed off to the public. If filming happens to be taking place on the day of your proposal, there will be no access to the dock at all.

It is also about a 30-minute walk from the parking lot through trees and foliage to reach the dock. For a surprise proposal, that can be a lot to explain to your partner without raising suspicion. It would also be a huge let down to walk all that way and not have access to the dock due to a production or private event.

Because of the access issues, long walk, and risk of production activity, I recommend either the morning tour option or the private sunset buyout instead.

Which Secret Island Proposal Option Is Best?

If you want the most budget-friendly option, the morning tour can work. This is still semi risky since we don’t have full access to the dock.

If you want the smoothest, most private, and most photo-friendly experience, the private sunset buyout is the better choice. Unfortunately this is also the most expensive option.

I honestly don't book clients for Option 3. As a preferred vendor at Kualoa Ranch, I don't think it's worth the risk. The walk is very long, it's easy to get lost on the trail, and I can't walk you over since it's supposed to be a surprise proposal. There are also homeless people living along portions of the back trail, which can sometimes make the experience uncomfortable or unpredictable.

For those reasons, I only recommend the other 2 options.

If your main goal is golden sunset light and a beachy engagement session look, we can also talk about other nearby Oahu proposal locations that offer similar vibes to the dock.

Final Thoughts

I've photographed a ton of proposals at Kualoa Ranch and around Oahu, and the biggest thing I've learned is that good planning makes all the difference. My job isn't just taking photos. That’s like 20% of it when it comes to proposal photography. The other 80% of it is helping you avoid common mistakes, stay hidden, keep the surprise intact, and make sure you actually get to enjoy the moment.
