A Beautiful Wedding Day at Male'ana Gardens in Kailua

Tiffany and Sungho had a beautiful wedding at Male'ana Gardens with the people who mattered most to them. The venue is tucked away in Kailua on the windward side of Oahu, surrounded by tropical greenery and a block from the beach. For couples planning a smaller wedding, it gives you a really nice combination of a private garden wedding venue and access to the landscapes people picture when they think about getting married in Hawaii.

For me as an Oahu wedding photographer, it is also one of those venues where you can create a lot of variety without spending half the wedding day traveling between locations. Tiffany and Sungho kept their celebration intimate, inviting their closest family to spend the afternoon and evening with them. The smaller guest count gave the entire wedding a really personal feeling and left plenty of room for the candid interactions they cared about most.

Tiffany + Sungho's Story

Tiffany and Sungho met online, but their story eventually connected two very different parts of the world. Sungho spent most of his life in Korea, while Tiffany was born and raised in the United States. They grew up with different cultures, experiences and perspectives, and instead of those differences pulling them apart, they became an important part of the relationship they built together. Over the years, they have learned from one another, shared their cultures and created a life that feels uniquely theirs.

Natural, Candid and Colorful Hawaii Wedding Photography

Before the wedding, Tiffany and Sungho told me they wanted their wedding photos to feel natural, candid and timeless. They also wanted Hawaii to actually look like Hawaii.

That meant keeping the vibrant greens of Male'ana Gardens, the blue sky, the color of the flowers and the natural atmosphere of the day instead of muting everything into a trendy edit that might look completely different a few years from now. That approach is a big part of how I photograph weddings.

I'll step in and give direction when a couple needs it, especially during portraits, but I don't want the entire wedding day to feel like one long photoshoot. Some of the photographs that become the most important later are usually the moments nobody planned.

A laugh between family members. Someone wiping away a tear during the ceremony. A quick look between the bride and groom. Kids wandering into the frame. A hug that lasts a little longer than expected.Tiffany and Sungho specifically told me they wanted those little moments photographed along with the major parts of their wedding day.

Twenty years from now, those are often the photographs that bring everything back.

Their First Look at Male'ana Gardens

We started photography before the ceremony with getting-ready details and portraits around the property.

Tiffany and Sungho chose to do a first look before their guests arrived, which gave them a chance to see each other privately and settle into the day together before the ceremony began. First looks are also really useful for intimate weddings because they give us more flexibility with the photography timeline. We can create some of the bride and groom portraits earlier while still leaving plenty of time after the ceremony for family photos, candid moments and portraits in different parts of the venue. And when you have a place as beautiful as Male'ana Gardens, there are quite a few places worth using.

An Intimate Garden Wedding Ceremony in Kailua

Their ceremony began in the late afternoon surrounded by tropical greenery and their closest family.

Passion Roots created the floral installation for the ceremony space, while live music from Jeremy Hirokawa helped set the atmosphere as guests arrived and continued through the processional and recessional.

The ceremony itself was simple, personal and exactly the kind of setting that works so well for a small Oahu wedding. Afterward, we moved right into family portraits before everyone settled into cocktail hour.

Because Tiffany and Sungho had such an intimate group, there was plenty of time to photograph the people closest to them without making the wedding feel like everyone was standing in an endless family-photo line.

Hula, Family and Cocktail Hour

One of my favorite parts of the afternoon was the hula during cocktail hour with guitarist Jeremy Hirokawa and Kawena of Kahiapo Talent.

Guests were eventually invited to participate in a hula lesson, and the hour concluded with the Hawaiian Wedding Song for Tiffany and Sungho before everyone joined them.

Moments like these are why I love photographing smaller destination weddings in Hawaii. You can have beautiful portraits and carefully planned details, but the photographs that really tell the story usually happen when everyone relaxes and starts enjoying themselves.

There were so many opportunities for candid wedding photography throughout this part of the day.

Garden and Beach Wedding Photos in Kailua

Of course, we also made time to take advantage of the scenery.

We photographed Tiffany and Sungho throughout the gardens at Male'ana Gardens before heading out for beach portraits nearby.

Having both environments available gives couples two completely different looks in one wedding gallery. The gardens provide rich tropical greenery and a secluded feeling, while the beach gives you the open sky, ocean and unmistakable Hawaii landscape.

For couples searching for a garden wedding photographer on Oahu but still wanting beach wedding photos, this is one of the things I really like about photographing weddings at Male'ana Gardens.

The goal wasn't to turn the afternoon into a fashion shoot. Tiffany and Sungho wanted photographs that felt like them, so I gave them enough direction to feel comfortable and then let them interact naturally.

Those little in-between moments were just as important as the traditional portraits.

Why Male'ana Gardens Is Great for an Intimate Oahu Wedding

If you're planning an intimate wedding or micro wedding on Oahu, Male'ana Gardens offers something a little different from a large resort wedding.

The property feels private, green and tucked away, and the different areas of the venue make it possible for the wedding day to move naturally from getting ready to the ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner and portraits.

From a photography perspective, I especially love having so much variety nearby.

You can create tropical garden wedding photos, candid images around the property and beach portraits without losing a huge portion of your wedding coverage driving across the island.

That matters more than people realize when planning a smaller wedding with only a few hours of photography.

If your priorities are an intimate guest list, natural surroundings, beautiful Hawaii scenery and plenty of time to actually enjoy your guests, Male'ana Gardens is definitely worth considering.

Planning Your Male'ana Gardens Wedding Photography

One thing I recommend for couples getting married here is leaving a little breathing room in the photography timeline.

You don't need hours of posed portraits, but having enough time to explore the gardens and head toward the beach gives your final gallery much more variety.

I also recommend thinking about how you want your Hawaii wedding photographs to feel years from now.

My own approach combines candid wedding photography with natural direction and more intentional bride and groom portraits. I want the scenery and colors of Hawaii to feel true to the day, while still creating photographs that feel polished and timeless.

You get the beautiful wedding portraits, but you also get the weird laugh, your parents watching the ceremony, your friends talking during cocktail hour and all the little things you didn't even realize were happening.

To me, you need both.
