Denise and Jorge at Male’ana Gardens, Kailua

Congratulations to Denise and Jorge.

Their family flew in from California to celebrate with them at Male'ana Gardens, and that set the tone for the whole day. This was not a big production with hundreds of guests and a schedule that never slows down. It was small, intimate, and super laid back, exactly the kind of day I love shooting there.

One of my favorite things about this venue is how small and intimate the weddings are. With fewer than 20 people, you really get to know everyone throughout the day. By the time we got to the ceremony, I was not photographing strangers. I knew who was who, I knew the family stories starting to come out, and I knew which moments were going to matter to them later.

As a photographer, it almost feels like you are hanging out with family, just happening to have a camera in your hands. Thanks for having me there to document it.

A small wedding where everyone is actually present

Male'ana Gardens is built for this size. The venue hosts intimate celebrations up to 20 guests, and only one wedding per week, so the day gets full attention and never feels rushed or shared. The gardens are lush and private, with palms and plumeria and views toward turquoise Kailua Bay, and there are quiet corners everywhere for a portrait or a minute alone together.

That scale changes the photos. There is no back row to miss and no crowd to shoot around. I can stay close for the ceremony, catch a parent's reaction without blocking anyone's view, and then step back and let family just be family. Their two sons were right in the middle of it all, which is exactly how it should be. Those are the frames that feel real later, not just the posed ones.

Denise and Jorge were cool and easy to work with from start to finish. That matters more than people think. When a couple is relaxed, their guests relax too, and the day photographs like itself instead of like a performance.

Photographing it on digital, documentary first

This wedding was shot on digital, all the way through.

My approach here was documentary first. I wanted the details, the reactions, and the guests, not just a checklist of portraits. The dress, the rings, the florals, the way family gathered after the ceremony, the laughter between formal photos. Those in-between moments are what make a small wedding gallery feel complete.

We still made time for portraits together, and for family photos that everyone actually wants printed. But most of the day, I was watching and waiting for the real thing to happen, then photographing it when it did. Digital lets me do that without slowing the day down. I can move quietly, adjust fast as the afternoon turns to evening, and keep the focus on people instead of on gear.

If you are planning a Male'ana Gardens wedding, that is worth knowing. You do not need a huge team or a complicated timeline to get a full, honest set of images. You need a photographer who will stay out of the way when it counts and step in clearly when it is time for portraits.

The details that made it theirs

Denise wore Thane by Madi Lane, a fit and flare gown with vine-inspired lace, and her ring is from Helzberg Diamonds. Those details photographed beautifully in the gardens, simple and classic, without competing with the place itself.

The vendor team kept the day calm, which is the highest compliment I can give a team on a small wedding. Kellie at Male'ana Gardens coordinated the day. Tom Bishop covered video. Kawena officiated. The Bar Coco handled the bar, Haus of Pua did the florals, Chef John at Private Dining Hawaii handled catering, MGX Beauty did makeup, Styled by Irae did hair, Henry Leoiki played music, and Mana Cakes Hawaii made the cake.

When a team like that works well together, the couple does not feel the moving parts. They just get to enjoy their family being all in one place, in Hawaii, for a few hours that go by too fast.

Planning a small, intimate wedding in Kailua

If you are thinking about a wedding like this, here is what I would tell you as a photographer who has shot at Male'ana Gardens.

Keep the guest list small on purpose. Fewer than 20 people is not a compromise here, it is the point. Everyone gets to be close, everyone gets photographed naturally, and no one spends the day waiting around.

Bring your closest people and let the place do the rest. You do not need a lot of decor or staging at Male'ana Gardens. The gardens, the palms, and Kailua Bay already give you a beautiful backdrop, so we can keep portraits simple and spend more time on candid moments.

Plan for family time, not just photo time. On a destination wedding, especially when family flies in from the mainland, the best photos often come after the formal photos are done, when everyone relaxes and starts celebrating together. Leave room for that in your day.

And if you are coming from California or anywhere on the mainland, trust your local team. A coordinator who knows the venue, a photographer who knows the light and the layout, and vendors who have worked there before will make a small day feel easy instead of stressful.

Questions couples ask about a small Male’ana Gardens wedding

Is Male’ana Gardens good for a destination wedding?

Yes. Denise and Jorge's family flew in from California, and that is a common story here. The venue is intimate, private, and set up for a small group, so it works well when your closest people are traveling to be with you.

How many guests can Male’ana Gardens host?

Up to 20 guests, including the couple. That small size is what makes the day feel personal, and it is why the photos feel so close and relaxed.

Do you photograph small weddings on digital?

Yes. This wedding was shot entirely on digital, with a documentary approach focused on details, reactions, and guests, plus portraits and family photos.

What should we prioritize for photos at a small wedding?

The ceremony, portraits together, family photos, and then candid time with your guests. At a small wedding, the guest photos matter just as much as the couple portraits, because those are the people who traveled to be there.

If you are planning a small, intimate wedding at Male'ana Gardens in Kailua, or a destination wedding on Oahu with your closest family, reach out and tell me about your day. I would love to photograph it the way Denise and Jorge's was photographed, relaxed, personal, and focused on the people who matter most.
