Surprise Proposal at Kualoa Regional Park | Josef & Yohana
A last minute trip to Oʻahu, a surprise proposal at Kualoa Regional Park, and one very easy decision
When Josef reached out about photographing his proposal to Yohana, the plan came together quickly. They were visiting Oʻahu, and he wanted to surprise her somewhere beautiful, meaningful, and unforgettable.
Kualoa Regional Park ended up being the perfect location.
With the Koʻolau Mountains rising behind them and the open green field stretching out in front of the ocean, it gave them the kind of backdrop that feels very Hawaiʻi without needing much else. Simple, quiet, scenic, and naturally beautiful.
Before the proposal, Josef filled out my questionnaire and wrote something that stuck with me: “Proposing to this woman is the easiest decision ever.”
After 2.5 years together, countless memories, adventures, laughs, and a friendship that grew into something much bigger, he knew it was time.
Yohana had no idea what was coming.
Standing beneath the mountains at Kualoa Regional Park, she thought they were just taking in the view and enjoying their time on Oʻahu. A few moments later, Josef was down on one knee asking her to marry him.
And of course, she said yes!
A Kualoa Regional Park proposal with the Koʻolau Mountains
Kualoa Regional Park is one of my favorite proposal locations on the east side of Oʻahu because it has such an iconic view without feeling overly complicated. The mountains, open space, and ocean nearby make it a really strong location for both the proposal moment itself and a short engagement session afterward.
For Josef and Yohana, we kept the session natural and focused on the emotion of the moment. After the proposal, we spent a little time creating portraits around the park so they could have a mix of real candid reactions, close-up details of the ring, and beautiful scenic images with the mountains behind them.
That’s one of the best parts of photographing proposals. The actual “yes” happens fast, but the moments afterward are often just as sweet. The laughs, the shock, the happy tears, the “wait, did that really just happen?” energy — those are the photos that make the gallery feel personal.
Planning a surprise proposal on Oʻahu
If you’re planning a surprise proposal in Hawaiʻi, a little bit of planning makes a huge difference.
For proposals, I usually help with timing, location ideas, where to stand, what direction to face, and how to keep the moment feeling natural. The goal is to make sure the proposal looks beautiful in photos, but still feels like your moment — not overly staged or awkward.
Kualoa Regional Park is especially great for couples who want a dramatic mountain backdrop, an easy-to-access location, and a setting that feels peaceful and scenic. It’s also close to Kualoa Ranch, which makes it a popular area for couples visiting Oʻahu.
Josef and Yohana’s proposal was such a sweet reminder that the best moments do not always need to be overcomplicated. Sometimes it really is as simple as choosing the right person, finding the right view, and asking the easiest question of your life.
Congratulations Josef and Yohana. Thank you for trusting me to capture such a meaningful part of your story.
