Waialae Beach Park Family Portraits | Proof That the Best Gifts Are Not Things
Every once in a while, a family books a session and casually mentions what it is for. When they shared that this session was a gift for the grandparents, it immediately stood out as something so thoughtful and sentimental. This Waialae Beach Park family portrait session was planned by the kids and the goal was simple, get everyone together, take photos that they can hang on their walls, and turn them into prints and an album that will live on a coffee table.
Waialae Beach Park in Kahala is a great choice for this kind of session. It is peaceful, easy to access, especially from Waikiki. Which is exactly the vibe you want when you are photographing multiple generations and hoping everyone stays relaxed. The light is soft, the beach is open, and there is enough room for kids to move without chaos fully taking over.
Everyone showed up in coordinated but not matchy outfits, which I will always recommend. Blues, neutrals, and soft peach tones worked perfectly with the beach and made the photos feel timeless. These are the kinds of images that still look good ten, twenty, thirty years from now. Which matters when you are literally making a book out of them.
What stood out most during this session was how natural everything felt. No over-posing. No forced smiles. Just grandparents surrounded by the people they love most, which honestly does most of the work for me.
The family plans to turn these images into a printed album and framed artwork for the grandparents, and that is my favorite part. Photos are meant to be seen. Held. Passed around. Not just scrolled past once on a smart phone. If you are looking for a meaningful gift on Oahu, especially for parents or grandparents, a family portrait session is one of those rare ideas that always works.
Waialae Beach Park was beautiful but also very windy which made the conditions a little tricky. We photoshop stray hairs and people in the background which helps make the final photos look great. It also helps that I've done many sessions there so knowing how to position people with the wind is a skill I've become comfortable with over the years. Luckily the light was perfect. And this family gave their grandparents something they will keep forever.
Also, big thanks to Hyatt Regency in Waikiki. This family found me through a referral from the hotel, where I am a preferred photographer. Huge thank you to their team for consistently connecting me with such wonderful families like this one and wedding photography bookings!
