Some people celebrate graduating college with a trip to Hawaii.
Jake decided to raise the stakes a little.
What started as a graduation trip to Oahu quickly turned into one of the sweetest surprise proposals we’ve photographed at Kualoa Regional Park. Sloane thought they were simply spending a relaxing evening exploring the east side of Oahu together before heading into their next season of life after college. Meanwhile, Jake had apparently been carrying an engagement ring around Hawaii the entire trip trying to act completely normal. That alone deserves recognition.
As the sun started dropping behind the Koʻolau Mountains, we made our way out into the open fields at Kualoa Regional Park. The lighting was soft, the mountains were glowing, and the entire area had that calm golden hour feeling Oahu somehow does better than almost anywhere else.
Then Jake got down on one knee.
The best thing about photographing surprise proposals is how real everything feels in the moment. There’s no posing yet, no overthinking, no trying to look perfect for photos. Just pure emotion. The shock, the laughing, the happy tears, and that brief moment where life suddenly changes direction right in front of you.
Sloane’s reaction was genuinely one of the sweetest ever.
Afterward we wandered through Kualoa Regional Park taking engagement photos while the sunset wrapped around the mountains. We finished the evening by the water with soft pastel skies, calm ocean views, and some of my favorite couples portraits from the entire session.
Kualoa Regional Park continues to be one of the best locations for surprise proposals and engagement photos on Oahu, especially for couples wanting dramatic mountain scenery without needing a long hike. Between the open fields, beach access, and iconic views of the Koʻolau mountain range, it’s one of the most beautiful places in Hawaii for sunset proposal photography.
